PROJECT 03 / 929 X MSU CAAD

Key Visual Design

The goal of this project is to design a key visual for the 929 Coffee Bar event Mississippi Made, an art market, live music, and beer and food specials event. The even brings together creatives from all over the state of Mississippi to share, sell, and exhange their work, ideas, music, and more. The focus on a key visual versus a poster design is very intentional, as promotional design has evolved beyond the contraints of a poster, and now must provide a flexible and scalable visual for printed as well as ditial formats.

Students must follow the brief provided to create the following assets:

1 11x17" Poster

See brief for more details and timeline.

*PROJECT 02 / CALENDAR DESIGN*

PROJECT 02 / CALENDAR DESIGN

In this project, we will design a 2023 calendar, from January to December.

The design is completely up to you, however, it must be able to be mailed in some form of standard envelope or package, and it must showcase every month and each day of the year in some form.

Your goal in this project is to work under the guidelines of functionality, legibility, and the restriction of envelope or package size.

*Adhering to a standard size only means your calendar must fit in order to be (hypothetically) shipped, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be unfolded or assembled into a more interesting form. Think outside of the envelope!

*PROJECT 01 / ZINE (ZEEN)*

PROJECT 01 / ZINE (ZEEN)

What is a zine anyway?

This project is an exploration of image study / sketching processes / conceptual thinking that will morph directly into a pseudo-practical editorial medium (Zine).

Select an object, and document / interpret the qualities of this object in the following ways:

10 Graphic Shape studies

10 Photographic studies

10 Typographic studies

No tools, methods, or modes of research or image making are off limits. Think outside of the box, both abstractly and figuratively. The main goal above all else of this project is to experiment, experiment, expriment!

*MINI-PROJECT 01 / LETTERFORM MARK*

MINI-PROJECT 01 / LETTERFORM MARK

In this project, we will play with the relationship between typographic form and graphic form.

Using your initials (first and last name), create a series of marks that integrate typography into a new graphic form.

What is the threshold of legible typography? At what point does the mark become graphic form? At what point does type become and icon?

The goal of this mini-project is to explore both the threshold of typographic form but also the creation of a “mark.” A mark is not unlike a logo, but is also not synonymous. Don’t be afraid to think abstractly, outside of the box.
