Key Visual Design

The goal of this project is to design a key visual for the 929 Coffee Bar event Mississippi Made, an art market, live music, and beer and food specials event. The even brings together creatives from all over the state of Mississippi to share, sell, and exhange their work, ideas, music, and more. The focus on a key visual versus a poster design is very intentional, as promotional design has evolved beyond the contraints of a poster, and now must provide a flexible and scalable visual for printed as well as ditial formats.

Students must follow the brief provided to create the following assets:

1 11x17" Poster
1 Social Media post for each major platform

What is a zine anyway?

The goal of this project to explore different tools, mediums, concepts, and modes of documenting a single object into a series of image studies. After a time of graphic exploraton and image experiemtns, the outputs will be organized and designed into a zine format.

Each student must produce the following image studies as a graphic interpretation/documentation of their object:

10 Graphic Shape studies
10 Photographic studies
10 Typographic studies


DELIVERABLES

30 studies (grapic shape, photography, typography) in 8.5 x 11 or 5.5 x 8.5 format
1 fully designed, printed, and bound zines

Design a logo for a classmate!

The goal is design a logo mark for one of your classmates. This should represent your "client" both visually and conceptually. We aren't designing corporate company logos (although you are allowed to invent a business for yourself), we are focusing on the reductions of visual form. What kinds of visual language can you develop?

As each student functions both as client and designer, you have to present ideas for your classmate to represent yourself, as well as work under their restrictions and direction.

SYLLABUS

OVERVIEW

This course will focus on the development of students’ skills as graphic designers and visual communicators through a series of conceptual, practical, and research based projects. We will explore the capabilites of the designer’s (infinite) toolbox via modes of new as well as traditional media and practices. Students will be engaged in different applications of the design discourse: branding & identity, logo design, poster design, packaging design, data visualization, print & digital design, and experimental approaches to the design practice.


STRUCTURE

Throughout this course we will undergo 6 mini-projects and 3 full-projects, as well as working and critique days. The course website functions are your home base for info. CONCEPT GUIDES DESIGN! Research, ideation, sketchbooking, and writing are crucial parts of the creative process and should be taken seriously no matter how small the project. SUBMIT WORK BEFORE CLASS FOR IN CLASS REVIEW (CANVAS) Each day begins with 5-10 minutes of design inspiration. I encourage each student to contribute to this portion of class, although it is not mandatory. What projects inspire you? Who are the designers and visual artists behind them? What are the takeaways? The more perspectives you gather, the more diverse your point of view both as a creative and a human will be. The remainder of each day will be used for class discussions, one on one critiques, class critiques, demonstrations, or working days. Working days are scheduled times where students are allowed time to work and request my review as needed. Most importantly, I will never tell you what to do. My position is to provoke and improve your ideas, not create them.
